Graveside services and interment for Dr. Sam B. Coward Jr., 90, of Algood, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021, from Overton County Memorial Gardens in Livingston.

Dr. Coward passed away Saturday August 28, 2021, at Morningside Assisted Living.

Sam was a longtime and respected pharmacist in the Upper Cumberland area. He owned and operated Algood Drugs for over 30 years and after selling the business he worked as a relief pharmacist at pharmacies in Livingston, Sparta, Monterey, Crossville, and Gainesboro.

He served in the Tennessee National Guard and was called to active duty as a medic during the Korean War.

Sam and his wife Kathyrn were bird watching enthusiasts. During retirement they traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic in search of new birds to add to their life list of sightings.

Born April 30, 1931, in Livingston, he was the son of the late Sam B. Coward Sr. and Marie England Coward.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathyrn Hinds Coward; and a sister, Jane Turner of Carthage.

He is survived by a daughter, Kay (husband David) Brady of Cookeville; a son, Sam B. (wife Wendy) Coward III of Crosslake, MN; three grandchildren, David (wife Catherine) Carter, John Brady, and Fiona (husband Brian) Hardy; three great grandchildren, Juana, Finn, and Roland: and two nieces, Elizabeth (husband Bill) Cameron of Cookeville, and Barbara (husband John) Maxwell of Carthage.
