ABrief Review of 1956 in Overton and Pickett Counties

J.D. Pennington, 63, was killed Friday when his tractor overturned on a gravel road near his farm home in the Greenbrier community on Thursday, June 7. The body was found about 30 minutes after the accident. Funeral services were held at the home on Saturday, June 9, with burial in the McDonald Cemetery in Clay County. Sutton Funeral home was in charge. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sarah Pennington; sons, Lester, Aaron, Joe, Paul, Amos and Luther all of Overton County; sisters, Mrs. Vernie Cunningham, Mrs. Howard Bohannon and Phoebe Pennington of Overton County and Mrs. Nannie Liens of the Moss community; brothers Sewell, Detroit, Michigan and Harlan of Sparta.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Reynolds of Nashville were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wilce West of Rickman.
Mr. and Mrs. G.B. Jones and family had a reunion Sunday. Those attending: Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Jones and family and Mr. and Mrs. Printis Nicholas and family of Cookeville; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Jones and family and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones and family of Byrdstown; Mrs. Ellis Dumas of Arkansas; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gields and family of Bowling Green, Kentucky; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jones of Arkansas; also Dan Jones who has been in Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have 14 children.
Sharon Grey pulled in a 3 ½ pound largemouth from right beneath her boat at Willow Grove.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Burton and daughter Ann of Dayton, Ohio were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Norrod Thursday evening.
Willie Murphy was buried in Okalona this week.
Millard Copeland of Texas is visiting his sister, Mrs. Lualla Boatman.
Douglas Reynolds of Nashville is spending the week with his cousin, Jerry Norrod.

Obey Story, Larry Copeland and Dr. Denton Norris brought home 75 stripes and crappies one night last week.
Millard V. Oakley has announced as candidate for the democratic nomination as direct representative for Overton County in the General Assembly of Tennessee, subject to the action of the people in the upcoming democratic primary.
Sarah Francis Bowmer of Nashville spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Halsey Bowmer.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Maynard of Cookeville visited Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Dickerson Sunday.
