Diamond 9 wins USSSA World Series

Diamond 9 wins USSSA World Series

Diamond 9 team members and coaches are, kneeling, Chris Large, Connor Sparkman, Daniel Taylor, Brandon Vincent, Kevin Young, Colby Harmon, Ethan Davis, Coach Mark Vincent, back row, coaches Joel Sparkman, Mike Taylor, Keven Reeder, and Jeff Harmon, Jared Davis, equipment manager Justin Davis, Colby Reeder, Head Coach Tracy Davis, and Brandon Cole.

Colby Reeder batted .412, had a .488 on base percentage, scored 8 runs, and had 8 RBI for in the USSSA World Series. He is the son of Keven and Donna Reeder of Livingston.

Diamond 9, a 14-under baseball team, competed in the 2007 USSSA World Series at Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee, FL, the Houston Astros spring training facility.

The team qualified for the World Series by winning the USSSA State Tournament in Rockwood.

Pool play began July 9 with a convincing 12-0 win over Altamont Baseball Club from Florida.

The following day’s game went much the same with another win, 9-0, over Kansas City Redwings.

Double-eliminations began on Wednesday, July 11, with Diamond 9 as the number 1 seed.

North Carolina Wolverines were roadkill for Diamond 9 by a 12-0 score.

As play continued on Thursday, July 12, the competition became tougher and the weather conditions became hotter. Temperatures were in the upper-90s, with a heat index of 110 degrees.

Diamond 9 faced another Tennessee team, Tennessee Diamond Dawgs. Diamond 9 gave up their first runs of the tournament, but managed a 6-2 win to move into the semifinals against Charleston Braves from South Carolina.

The winning streak continued for Diamond 9 with a 4-1 victory, and a place in Saturday’s championship round.

Charleston defeated Worthington Knights from Ohio in the losers bracket to advance to the championship game against Diamond 9.

The championship game began much the same as the previous games, with
Diamond 9 scoring runs early and never looking back. Diamond 9 won the USSSA World Series championship with an 8-2 score.

Diamond 9 recorded a perfect 6-0 week, scoring 51 runs and allowing only 5. Diamond 9’s season record was 22-8 with a season-ending 15-game winning streak. Players on the team are from Overton, Putnam, White, and Cumberland counties.

Cookeville girls softball offers fall league

Cookeville Girls Softball League will offer a fall fastpitch league beginning September 4 and ending October 5.

Divisions will be offered for 8U, 10U, 12U, and 16U based on age as of December 31, 2007.

Registration fee will be $35 per player or $50 per family. Registrations will be taken Saturday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Jere Whitson Youth Field.

Overton 7-8 year-old All-Stars runner-up in tournament

The Overton County 7-8 year-old All-Star team competed in the All-Star Tournament held in Livingston and took the runner-up spot.

Overton County’s first opponent was Fentress County on Monday, July 9. Overton won 17-5.

The following day, Putnam County defeated Jackson County 16-14.

Overton County faced Putnam County in the winners bracket on Thursday, July 12, but the Cookeville-based team edged ahead for a 12-11 win.

Jackson County destroyed Fentress County 29-6 in the losers bracket to stay alive.

On Friday the 13th, Overton narrowly defeated Jackson County 13-12. Then, Overton County defeated Putnam County 13-12 to force a Saturday championship game, winner take all.

Putnam County overpowered the Overton County squad 18-4 to take the 7-8 year-old All-Stars Tournament championship.

Final sign-up set for Outlaw Cheerleading

The Overton County Outlaw Cheerleading final sign-ups and uniform fittings will be held Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. until noon at Livingston City Park at the picnic tables.

Grades 1-6 sign-up fee is $10.
