The 69th Annual Overton County Agricultural Fair was held at Overton County Fairgrounds July 19-28. Fairgoers were treated to the sights and sounds of colorful rides, such as the ever-present Ferris wheel along with games and carnival food. Agricultural events took place in the main arena and in designated areas to the sides of the main arena and behind the grandstand. As always, agricultural exhibits were on display under the grandstands and in the various fair buildings.

Livingston woman charged after leaving baby in car

A Livingston woman was arrested in Cookeville on Tuesday, July 24 for leaving her infant daughter unattended in a car at a South Willow Avenue store, police said.

Amanda Nicole Skidmore, 29, of Delta Country Lane, Livingston, is charged with child neglect in the case, according to a report by Cookeville Police Officer James Harris.

The child, who is three months-old, was later turned over to her father, and the case was reported to Department of Children’s Services, the officer said.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. July 24 when someone called police and reported that an infant had been left alone in a vehicle parked at the Save-A-Lot store on South Willow Avenue.

Officer Harris responded and located the gray station wagon parked in front of the store, he said.

“I could hear a baby crying as soon as I exited my vehicle,” the officer’s report stated. “I found a young female infant crying in her car seat, which was strapped in the back seat. The child had been left alone in the vehicle with the windows up and the doors unlocked.”

The infant’s head was “wet with sweat” and her eyes were swollen from crying, he said.

Officer Robert Cantwell arrived and assisted in getting the child out of the car seat, and the crying stopped once she was out, Officer Harris said.
A few minutes later, the mother came out of the store and told the officers she had “forgotten her child in the vehicle,” the report stated.

“I spoke to two witnesses who observed the child in the vehicle, and they said the woman had left the child for approximately 15 to 20 minutes before officers arrived,” the officer said.

Amanda Nicole Skidmore was taken to Putnam County jail. Allegedly, she told the officers she “had got into a hurry and ran into the store with her friend and forgot her child in the car,” the report stated.

“She did not remember until she came out and found the officers around her car,” the report stated. “She stated she had left the other children with their father and had brought the child with her.”

Skidmore was booked into jail and her bond set at $5,000. She goes to court August 20.

CEO George Elmer said, “We are expanding our operations in Middle Tennessee, and adding an upholstery operation to our plans just made good sense.

“We have a management team already in place, and there are many excellent skilled workers in the area.”
