15 Rules For Swimming

Heat waves sweep the country every summer. Hundreds of deaths are caused by the heat and scores are drowned while seeking relief by swimming.

Swimming is a healthful, body-building sport, but it is well to learn the dangers that go with it. Following the rules set forth here will add to the safety and pleasure of swimming.

1. Wait 2 hours after eating before entering the water.

2. Stay in the shallow water while learning to swim.

3. Never swim alone. Always have a “Buddy” swimmer with you, preferably a group with a swimming leader. Stay with Buddy.

4. Before diving, be sure that the water is deep enough; that there are no obstructions, such as stumps, rocks, snags, or other divers below the surface of the water.

5. In swimming out from the shore, remember that the return trip takes energy. Save it. Don’t swim when tired.

6. Swim with the current, not against it, and in a diagonal direction toward the shore. This applies if caught in an undertow.

7. Do not call for help unless needed. Trying to fool someone is dangerous sport.

8. Wear something white while swimming, white bathing cap or a white cloth sewed on bathing suit, front and back, handkerchief about neck, etc.

9. Do not show off. Remember, many good swimmers have drowned.

10. Diseases have been contracted while swimming. If water is contaminated or doubtful, stay out.

11. Do not swim where there is quicksand, or where poison ivy, sumac, or other poisonous plants thrive.

12. Do not swim if you have heart trouble. Do not dive if you have diseases of the head such as affected sinuses.

13. A swimming leader should have a whistle. Each group should respond to the sound in case of emergency. Limit the size of groups.

14. Severe cases of sunburn have caused deaths. Get your tan gradually.

15. Every swimmer should by all means learn the American Read Cross methods of life saving, including both actual rescue and artificial respiration.
