Mike A. Phillips, Overton County native, died in
Nashville hospital Friday
Mike A. Phillips, 48, a native of Overton County, died in a Nashville hospital Friday, July 2, at 7 a.m., as a result of injuries received when struck by a railroad locomotive in Nashville on the night of February 9, 1937. He had been employed for some time in Nashville. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Milton Phillips, and was born and reared in the Third District, near Hilham.

Surviving are his wife, Ida Pennington Phillips; 3 half-sisters, Mrs. Beulah Wilmore, Chattanooga, Mrs. Zoole May Berry, Anderson, Ind., Mrs. Laura Chaman, Chesterfield, Ind.; and 4 half-brothers, Marion, Martin, Wheeler, and Wylie Phillips, all of the Third District near Hilham.

Funeral services were conducted at Allens Chapel Monday, with burial in the cemetery there.

Independence Day Celebration held here in
Livingston draws big crowd

The Independence Day Celebration sponsored by the merchants and businessmen of Livingston was held on Monday with the overflow crowd estimated conservatively at seven thousand people. The weather was ideal and the people were orderly in conduct and the day was enjoyed by all.
    
Among the prize winners are the following:
    
Best Male Quartet:
1st prize, Byrdstown quartet;
    
Best Girl’s Duet Under 14:
1st prize, Coeda Ruble; 2nd prize, Christine Cooper;

Best Hog Caller:
George P. Ray;

Best Husband Called:
1st prize, Mrs. Lola Dickerson; 2nd prize, Mrs. Lucille Reynolds, and 3rd prize, Mrs. T.B. Daniels;
   
Guinea Contest:
1st prize, George Crabtree, 2nd prize, Estel Smith, and 3rd prize, Hubert Fleming;
   
Fiddler’s Contest:
1st prize, J.F. Moss, Gainesboro, and 2nd prize, divided between Keen Bradley and D.M. Beard;
   
Best String Band:
1st prize, Jackson County Band, and 2nd prize, Albany, Kentucky band;
   
Nail Driving Contest (for women only):
1st prize, Lona Belle Eldridge, and 2nd prize, Mrs. Otho Qualls;
    
Largest Family Present: 1st prize, Douglas Richardson, with eleven, and 2nd prize, Joe Logan, with nine; and
   
Bread Eating Contest:
1st prize, Gordon Gunnels, and 2nd prize, Clark Wright;
    
The ball game between Livingston team and Nashville team was played in the afternoon with a victory of six to two in favor of Nashville.
    
The prize of a Free Marriage License to the first couple applying was won by Miss Dorothy Howard and Ralph Bowman with Rev. John Phillips officiating.
