U.S. Marine Corps to enlist 39 men during March
A quota of 39 enlistments for March has been assigned the U.S. Marine
Corps Recruitting Office, Macon, Ga., headquarters for this area.
It is announced by Major J.M. Tidsley, officer in charge.
Young men between the ages of 18 and 25 can enlist and will be
selected from among the applicants submitting their qualifications
on forms supplied by the Macon office, it is reported. They must
be of good moral character and not less than 66 inches in height.
Completion of one year of senior high school is required.
Thomas J. Hammons died Tuesday at his home
Thomas J. Hammons, 82, farmer of the First District of this county
died at his home near Rickman, on Tuesday, March 2, at 6:30 a.m.,
after a prolonged illness.
He had been a faithful member of the Freewill Baptist Church for
many years and was active in civic work.
His wife, Mrs. Margaret Bilbrey Hammons, died six years ago.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Nelson, with whom
he lived, and Mrs. Bertha Warden; four sons, Robert and Irvin Hammons
of Overton County, and Floyd and Troy Hammons of the West.
Funeral arrangements had not been made Wednesday pending arrival
of his sons.
Marriage Licenses issued during month of March
Marriage Licenses issued by H.C. Swallows, County Court Clerk for
Overton County, for the month of February, are as follows: Osroe
Reynolds and Leona Taylor; Wint Hooten and Nola Walker; Lee France
and Etta Phipps; Ralph Smith and Agnes Baldwin; and Guy Wilson and
Etta Hargis.
Funeral services held for Miss Lula McDonald
Miss Lula McDonald, aged 39 years, daughter of James McDonald and
Mrs. Lean Smith McDonald, died on Sunday, February 14, 1937, after
a lingering illness. She was a faithful Christian and highly respected.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Ova Ledford of Ivyton; four brothers,
Ben, Bug, and Otis McDonald, of Livingston, and Harrison McDonald
of Clarkrange Cumberland County.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.M. Smith of the Missionary
Baptist Church Monday, February 15, at 3 p.m. at the McDonald home
in the Tenth District. Burial was at Cedar Point or better known
as the Ferrill graveyard.
