Marriage licenses issued during January
Marriage licenses issued by H.C. Swallows, county court clerk, for
the month of January 1937, are as follows:
Bill Pierce and Zelpha Barlow; Ernest T. Arline and Vella Rains;
Sewell Ledbetter and Lizzie Smith; Thomas B. Hunter and Lois Bowers;
C.H. Myers and Vilda P. Ledbetter; J.M. Crawford and Ana Lee Sevier;
Leo Boles and Imogene Stewart; Bill Perry and Alma Westmoreland;
Ester Burgess and Olyne Holman; and Elmo Bilbrey and Emma England.
Funeral services held for Richard Thomas Carr
Richard Thomas Carr, known familiarly as "R.T." Carr,
one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the First
district, died at his home at Netherland after an illness of several
weeks duration. His ancestors were among the stalwart pioneers who
settled in the territory of Overton County more than a century ago.
He was a son of the late William and Eliza Jane Copeland Carr and
was a widower, his wife, Mrs. Martha Jolly Carr, having died nine
years ago.
He was honorable and uncompromising in contending for what he believed
to be right. He had been a faithful member of the Independent Order
of Odd Fellows more than forty years.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Willie C. Stockton of Rickman; and
three brothers, C.T. and S.E. Carr of Livingston, and Harrison Carr
of Okema, Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held at the residence of Elder J. Brockett
Hastings on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and were concluded at the Copeland
grave yard, two miles south of Livingston at 11 o'clock, where Livingston
Lodge No. 302m I.O.O.F., had charge and administered the rites of
the order.
Rites held for Mrs. Tennie D. Hammons
Mrs. Tennie Dishman Hammons, 66, wife of Arthur Hammons of the Rickman
community of the First district of Overton County, died at the Cookeville
hospital on Sunday forenoon, Jan. 31, after a prolonged illness.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, affiliating with the
Paran congregation. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter,
Tina Belle Hammons, of Rickman; three sons, Paul and George Hammons
of Overton County, and Lester Dishman of Crossville; two sisters,
Mrs. Mary Ramsey and Mrs. Alice Copeland of Allred; and four brothers,
Ed and Thomas Dishman of Brotherton and George and Denton Dishman
of Overton County.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at Paran church, with
burial in Paran cemetery.
