Funeral services held for Jesse M. Martin
Jesse McClennon Martin, 90, a farmer, blacksmith, and tanner and the oldest citizen of his community, died at his home near Fox Springs, on Tuesday, January 26, after an illness of two week's duration. He was a former citizen of Overton County, having operated a blacksmith shop at Hilham for several years. He was widely and favorably known. He had been a faithful member of the Church of Christ for more than fifty years.

He had been a widower for eight years. His only surviving child, a daughter, Mrs. Tizzie Johnson, lived in his home and kept house for him. Surviving however, are several grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday forenoon at the Buford graveyard in the immediate community where he died, with burial at that place.

Spelling contest to be held February 13
The Overton County Elementary Spelling Contest will be held at the Baptist Church in Livingston on February 13 at 10:00 a.m. The winner in this contest will be eligible for entering the Nashville Banner contest. The Banner winner will be awarded a prize of $2.50, second prize $1.50, and third prize $1.00.

This contest is open to all children in grades 1 to 8. The contest will be oral and only one trial for each word will be given. One pupil is eligible from each school.

Mrs. L.E. Peek has been selected pronouncer. Judges selected are Lucille Bilyeu, Opal Parrott, and Otho Qualls.

Edward N. Cullom dies in Nashville of heart attack
Edward Northcraft Cullom, 59, died suddenly of a heart attack Friday night at 11 o'clock in Nashville, where he had made his home for the past forty years. He was born and reared in Overton County. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the Waverly Place Methodist Church in Nashville with Rev. Willard H. Blue, his former pastor, and Rev. Grady Wall, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Cullom had been associated with the laundry industry in Nashville since young manhood.

He was a member of the Masonic order, and an active member of the steward and chairman of the welcome committee in the Waverly Place Methodist Chuch for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Cockrill Cullom; daughters, Misses Ruth, Rachel, and Rebecca Cullom; sons, Ed N. and L.R. Cullom; granddaughters, Margaret Lynn and Martha Jean Cullom; sisters, Mrs. T.B. Rawls, and Mrs. J.E. Saunders; brothers, W.B. Cullom of Nashville; K.P. Cullom of Wilson, Ark., H.M. Cullom of Macon, Ga., and J.A. Cullom of Shelbyville, Tenn.
