The 68th Annual Overton County Agricultural Fair was held at Overton
County Fairgrounds July 20-29. Fairgoers were treated to the sights
and sounds of colorful rides, such as the ever-present Ferris wheel,
above, and the always popular Himalaya, below right, along with
games and carnival food. Agricultural events took place in the main
arena and in designated areas to the sides of the main arena and
behind the grandstand. As always, agricultural exhibits were on
display under the grandstands and in the various fair buildings.

OCN
wins awards in state press contest
Overton County News won four awards in the 2006 Tennessee
State Press Contest, sponsored by University of Tennessee and Tennessee
Press Association.
OCN won 2nd place in the Best Single Advertisement
category. The advertisement was judged against all other entries
from non-daily newspapers across the state.
The winning ad from OCN was "We Love The Wildcats"
for First National Bank, which depicted a montage of photos from
the Class 3A championship game.
OCN Advertising Director Darren Oliver said, "I
appreciate the opportunity to work with our advertisers and to supply
creative advertising ideas for them."
Overton County News won two awards in the Best Personal
Humor category.
Bob won 3rd place for a "North County Lines"
in which and incapacitated Debbie sent him to the grocery store.
"I want to thank Carson Oliver for providing
me the opportunity to write," Bob said. "I would also
like to thank Sherra Garrett for being an inspiration exceeding
all others.
The other award OCN won in the category was a 5th
place by Beth Underwood's "Thoughts from the Mountain"
column in which Colton locked the dog in the bathroom, and the door
locked from the inside.
She said, "For anyone who reads my column, they
probably know that life with a 5 year-old can be adventurous, to
say the least. It's an honor to be part of an award-winning family
newspaper."
OCN took 5th place in Make-Up & Appearance.
Editor Dewain E. Peek said, "To place in this
category against the newspapers at that level shows the skill and
dedication of our staff. I am proud of this award, because our circulation
has us competing against much larger newspapers."
Overton County News competed in the upper category
for non-daily newspapers, which requires a circulation of 5,300
or above.

THP debunks
crackdown e-mail as hoax
"Don't be fooled by an e-mail hoax hitting inboxes
across Tennessee," Tennessee Highway Patrol emphatically stressed
in a notice to news organizations this weekend.
The Department of Safety had received several inquiries
from media across the state about an e-mail claiming a "ticket
writing frenzy" will begin in Tennessee on July 31.
"Please be advised the e-mail is false,"
the THP notice states.
The urban legend debunking website http://www.snopes.com/politics/traffic/speeding.asp
reports this e-mail hoax originated in New Jersey in May 2005 and
has since spread to several other states from Texas to Hawaii. The
e-mail first surfaced last year in Tennessee.
