Changes
to Guard unit now official
By Beth Underwood, OCN staff
As a part of the United States Army's restructuring, what has long
been known as Troop K 3/278th Armored Cavalry Regiment is now Company
A, 3-109th Armor Battalion.
But while the name has changed, members of Alpha Company
will essentially be doing the same job they did when deployed to
Iraq in 2004.
Before the deployment, the former Knife Troop was
comprised of Tankers and Bradleys. But the men trained for Iraq
as a mechanized unit, using only Bradleys and dismounted infantry.
Sergeant First Class Jerry Asberry, Readiness NCO
for Company A, said, "The whole concept is that the army will
have all types of military units comprised into Brigade Combat Teams
(BCT), such as Infantry, Artillery,Military Police, and Tanker units
just to name a few.
"That way, if needed, the Army can pull assets
(single units) needed for a particular mission from a Brigade Combat
Team without having to deploy the whole Brigade, unless the mission
requires the entire BCT."
Of equal significance is the expansion of Alpha Company.
Effective May 1, the Oneida Armory became the second detachment
of Company A, joining the Jamestown Headquarters and Livingston
Detachment.
Captain Paul Shannon, Alpha Company's commander, said,
"This transition will be seamless and transparent to the local
communities as the armories will remain open and manned with qualified
soldiers as they always have been."
The three armories, each separated by an hour's drive,
will present unique challenges where logistics, administrative matters,
and training issues are concerned. But they are issues, Shannon
said, his company is prepared to overcome as the men change into
a new fighting force.
"Having visited the new armory in Oneida, it
was very apparent that once again, A Co. 3/109th is receiving the
best Tennessee has to offer," Shannon said. "Although
Oneida Armory provides a much smaller contingent of soldiers, they
will be instrumental in the future successes of our newly transitioned
company."
The addition of Oneida brings total number of personnel
to approximately 154.
Asberry said, "As we start this transitional
period, let us not forget our fallen brothers who couldn't come
home with us from Iraq; Ssg. Victoir Lieurance, Sgt. Joseph Hunt,
and Sgt. Wesley Tucker. Their sacrifice allows us to continue the
fight in their memory and in their honor."
