Alpine High School to hold commencement Ê Ê
The commencement program for the Alpine High School will begin with
the Baccalaureate sermon, which will be delivered to the senior
class on Sunday, May 3, at 10:45 a.m., in the new Presbyterian Church
at Alpine, by the Rev. Clair S. Adams, former pastor of the church,
who will be assisted by Dr. J.H. Miller of Lebanon and Dr. Warren
H. Wilson of New York City. Ê Ê
The commencement exercises will be held on Monday, May 4, at 10:00
a.m., the principal address will be delivered by Dr. Orr of Nashville.
Sixteen students will receive diplomas, as follows: Erie Allred,
Helen Carlock, Mary Crawford, Pearl Franklin, Ewing Linder, Ernest
Little, Ora Mahan, Ruth McCormick, Odell Mullinix, Cordell Norrod,
Mildred Shipley, Fred Smith, Guy Smith, Veo Smith, and Sara Ann
Young. Ê Ê
Helen Carlock of Alpine won the honor as Valedictorian and Cordell
Norrod of Monroe as Salutatorian.
Funeral services were held for Eliza Copeland Ê Ê
Mrs. Eliza Copeland, 89, widow of the late A.J. Copeland, of the
Tenth District of Overton County, died at her home in the Brown's
Chapel community, on Friday, April 24, at 1:00 a.m. after a brief
illness. Ê Ê
Her husband was a confederate soldier in the War Between the States.
Ê Ê
She had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years and
was widely known and highly respected. Ê Ê
She is survived by four children, as follows: three daughters,
Mrs. Malisa Evans and Mrs. Mary Smith of Alpine, and Mrs. Alice
Garrett of Wirmingham; and one son, J. Rice Copeland of Twinton;
one sister, Mrs. Susan Norris of Alpine; amd two brothers, Simon
Brown of Alpine and A. Center Brown of Livingston. Ê Ê
Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock,
with burial in the Hayter graveyard.
Mrs. Delia Phillips dies of a heart attack Ê Ê
Mrs. Delia Phillips, 63, wife of John Phillips of the Third District
of Overton County, died at her home near Allon's Chapel on Tuesday,
April 21, at 9:00 a.m., suddenly of a heart attack. She was a member
of the Church of God and was widely known. Ê Ê
Besides her husband, she was survived by nine children, as follows:
three daughters, Mrs. Emmett Turner of Crab Orchard, Mrs. Jesse
Turner of Rockwood, and Mrs. Forest Bennett of Havensville, Fla.,
and six sons, Wesley, William, Bennie, Benton, and Buren Phillips,
all of Overton County, and Jesse Phillips of Nashville; and one
sister, Mrs. Liza Carwile. Ê Ê
Funeral services will be conducted at Allon's Chapel on Wednesday,
with the Rev. Aaron A. Cunningham officiating, with burial in the
cemetery there.
