Civitan Cougars win 16-under tournament

The 16-Under League Tournament was played recently in Livingston with all six teams participating – Livingston Ready Mix, Upper Cumberland Sports, Livingston Regional Hospital, First National Bank, Union Bank, and Civitan.

Livingston Civitan, defending their regular season crown, opened the first round against Livingston Ready Mix. Civitan was able to hit the ball well and emerged victorious by a final score of 22-2.

The tournament held true to form in the following games with number 1 seed Civitan pitted against number 2 seeded Union Bank. Civitan, again with hustle and great defense, remained in the winner’s bracket and advanced to the finals. This time, the score was 17-6.

Union Bank, the most improved team in the league this season, would work back into the finals of the tournament to once again face Civitan. In a game that had been postponed several times, and both teams rusty and at times sloppy, Civitan once again took over in the fourth inning and put away Union Bank. The final score was 17-8.

With the victory, the Civitan Cougars completed its own version of the Triple Crown. Civitan won the regular season championship with a 10-0 record. By hard work, sweat, and determination, the Cougars won three straight games to win the district championship. Next, the team claimed three consecutive victories to win the league championship.

The Civitan Cougars finished the 2002 season with a perfect 16-0 record, a feat not seen in the league in more than 10 years.
