Bubbie Buzachero drafted by Toronto Blue Jays

By DEWAIN E. PEEK, OCN staff

Former Livingston Academy Wildcats baseball player Bubbie Buzachero was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays last week in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"I was very excited when I heard it," Buzachero said. "I'm ready to start my pro career."

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound righthanded pitcher most recently played for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles until he left the team earlier this year. He will now enter rookie league, playing for Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada.

With pitchers needed by so many big league teams, and the Blue Jays in particular need, Buzachero believes he is in a good position to realize his dreams.

"They've not got a whole lot of pitching right now," he said of the Blue Jays. "I hope to move through the ranks and make it to the big show."

Buzachero has dreamed of playing in the major leagues since his days at Livingston City Park where he was an undersized "junkball" pitcher who used his smarts mixing up pitches to get outs.

As he grew taller in high school during his stint with the Livingston Academy Wildcats, velocity was added to his fastball. That velocity has now helped him develop a good slider.

Entering professional baseball is an early birthday present for Buzachero, who will turn 21 on Thursday, June 13.

He is the son of Marco and Rose Buzachero of Livingston.
