Wildcats Begin Play This Weekend

By Dewain E. Peek, OCN staff

Members of the 2001-2002 Livingston Academy Wildcats varsity basketball team are, seated from left, Jesse Wolfram, Brian Colson, Kyle Copeland, Luke Eldridge, Shawn Grey, Cody King, standing from left, Assistant Coach Greg Bibb, Dustin Ferrell, Jamie Gurley, Matt Reeder, Jeff Aldridge, Joseph McGill, and Coach Danny McCoin.

Members of the 2001-2002 LA Wildcats junior varsity squad are, seated from left, Jimmy Davidson, Cody Sells, Wesley Puckett, Brad West, standing from left, Assistant Coach Greg Bibb, Shawn Grey, Jacob Pennington, Matt Reeder, Brian Colson, and Coach Danny McCoin.

The primary objective for the 2001-2002 Wildcats is “Get Smart". No, not the spy comedy starring Don Adams, but learning to play intelligent basketball.

Coach Danny McCoin said, “If we can get real smart, real quick, we’ll be all right."

Learning quickly how to do the little things right will make the difference for this year’s squad.

“We’re not going to burn the nets up, by no means," Coach McCoin said. “We hope we’ll be a good shooting team. We’re not going to press and get a lot of turnovers. We’re going to try to rely on some shooting, and playing good solid team defense.

“We’re not going to be big, we’re not going to be little, we’re not going to be fast. We’re going to have to be real smart, play real smart fundamental basketball."

This year’s team will be led by three seniors – Jesse Wolfram, Jeff Aldridge, and Joseph McGill.

Kyle Copeland, Dustin Ferrell, and Jamie Gurley are three juniors on the squad.

Sophomores on the team are Cody King and Luke Eldridge.

Three freshmen are on the varsity squad – Brian Colson, Matt Reeder, and Shawn Grey.

“We’ve got some young kids, and then we’ve got some kids that haven’t played, that need experience, who are good ballplayers, good athletes," Coach McCoin said. “We just need to get some experience under their belt.

“If those two who have got the most experience will carry their weight and play pretty good, talking about Jesse and Jeff, then you throw in Joseph, who’s another senior, who knows, we might win some ballgames."

Coach McCoin received a new assistant this year in the person of Greg Bibb, who has been assistant coach under Roy Whited at White County High School for the past two years. Bibb graduated from Todd Central High School in Kentucky in 1992. He played for Tennessee Tech from 1992 to 1996, starting three years.

Coach McCoin said of his new assistant, “He’s been doing a great job. We’re happy we got him. He’s helped us tremendously already.

“He knows a lot about the ballgame. He’s going to be nothing but an asset to us."

One of Assistant Coach Bibb’s responsibilities is guiding the junior varsity team. The freshman squad consists of Wesley Puckett, Jimmy Davidson, Shawn Grey, Brad West, Brian Colson, Matt Reeder, Cody Sells, and Jacob Pennington.

Of the entire Wildcats team, Bibb said, “We’ve got some good kids, hard-working kids.

“I’m just happy to be here working with a coach like Coach McCoin. I just try to do whatever he needs me to do."

The varsity squad will see action Friday and Saturday in the Pickett County Thanksgiving Classic. The Cats will face Victory Christian at 7:30 Friday, Nov. 23, then at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 the Cats will play Knox-Austin East. The Wildcats will then travel to play at Cookeville on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
