The Livingston Academy Wildcats start off this year's football season at home against the Crossville Jets on Friday night, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.

The 'Cats have lost 21 senior players to graduation, one of the largest classes in school history, making a void to fill by others.

Coach Matt Eldridge said, "We will be a much younger team. Whereas having juniors and seniors as backups, this year we will have freshmen and sophomores fill those positions."

Josh Walker (6-2, 150, Jr.) will be the Wildcats' quarterback this year following two seasons as a backup quarterback. Last year Walker completed 12 of 28 for 173 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcats have several returning seniors at the runningback position. James Clouse (6-0, 185, Sr.) is most likely to see action at fullback and Jonathon Cummings (6-0, 185, Sr.) will likely play tailback. Cummings rushed for 237 yards and had 3 touchdowns last year.

Additional depth will come from Matt Huddleston (6-0, 170, Sr.), Jared Rudd (5-9, 150, Jr.), and Marco Lisi (5-10, 175, Jr.)

This year's group of wide receivers include seniors Jesse Wolfram (5-11, 175, Sr.) and Josh Cravins (5-10, 170, Sr.). Others returning include Lance Smith (5-8, 135, Sr.), Matt Simcox (5-11, 140, So.), and Lance Holland (6-1, 165, So.).

The Wildcats have several players capable of playing the tight end position this year. Those players include Matt Huddleston (6-0, 170, Sr.), Phillip Murphy (6-2, 170, So.), Whitney Coleman (5-9, 200, So.), and freshmen Matt Reeder and Jacob Norrod.

The offensive line looks promising this year with many capable players. These players include Jacob Henson (6-4, 240, Sr.), Matt Mahaney (5-10, 225, Sr.), Ben Gore (6-0, 240, Sr.), Josh Dial (6-3, 275, Sr.), and Michael Hayes (5-10, 250, Jr.). Others that make up this unit include James Speck (5-9, 220, Sr.), Michael Poston (6-2, 250, Jr.), Matt Rooker (6-0, 260, Jr.), and Rob Medley (6-0, 260, Jr.).

This year's defensive line is most likely to be built around Josh Dial, Michael Hayes, Jacob Henson, and Matt Mahaney. Like the offensive line, many players are there to support the team's leaders in this position.

Several players are at the linebacker position this year. These players include Jonathon Cummings and James Clouse. Last year, these seniors had 34 and 31 tackles, respectively. Other linebackers include Matt Huddleston and Marco Lisi.

This year's defensive backfield includes free safety Josh Cravins as well as Jonathan Smith and Jonathon Cummings.

Joseph McGill (6-3, 215, Sr.) will once again be the Wildcats' placekicker. Last year McGill made 26 of 35 extra point attempts and 3 of 5 field goal attempts. McGill will also do the punting for the 'Cats this year.

Coach Eldridge said of the upcoming season, "We always expect a lot from our kids and hope to have a good season this year."

Raines Named To NGCA Scholar Team

Tusculum College's Andrea Raines has been named to the 2000-2001 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II All-American Scholar Team, according to college officials.

The NGCA All-American Scholar Golf Team recognizes and honors student-athletes who are outstanding in both academics and competitive golf at the collegiate level.

Raines, a rising junior on the Pioneer golf team, has accumulated a cumulative grade point average of 3.46 while majoring in pre-medicine.

The Hilham native posted a stroke average of 82.29 last season, while recording five top 20 finishes. She tied for seventh individually at the South Atlantic Conference championship as the Pioneers captured their second straight league crown.

Raines, who played her prep golf at Livingston Academy, is also very active in community service, serving as a member of the Tusculum Youth Tobacco Team, a group that educates the public on the dangers of tobacco. She has also participated in the Girls Scouts of America Sports day at Tusculum and volunteers with Tusculum College's annual "Nettle Day" community service project.

She is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Tusculum Athletics Director's Honor Roll.

Tusculum College is an NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference, which is comprised of eight colleges and universities in Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
