Wildcats Baseball Team Endures Tough Tourney
By Russell Garrett OCN staff

The Livingston Academy Wildcats baseball team competed last week in the Friendship Christian Classic Tournament on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28.

The 'Cats had a rough weekend, playing three games and adding three losses to their record. This brings their record to 14-11 overall, 6-4 in the district.

The 'Cats first met Friendship Christian on Friday, April 27. Friendship Christian took control of the game early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning and 4 runs in the second to lead 7-0 after two innings.

LA scored a run in the third and 2 runs in the fourth inning, but that was all they would get. Friendship Christian went on to score a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to win by a score of 10-3.

Matt Poston (4-2) started on the mound for the 'Cats. He pitched 2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 7 runs, while striking out 3 batters. He was relieved by Shea Stout (1-2, 3 saves) who pitched the remaining 4 innings. He gave up 4 hits and 3 runs, and threw 6 strikeouts.

LA had only 5 hits in the game. Getting hits for the 'Cats, Jonathan Cummings went 1 for 4 with a double, Josh Parsons went 1 for 3 with a triple, Bryant Harmon went 1 for 3 with a double, Robert Richardson went 1 for 2 with a single, and Shea Stout went 1 for 2 with a single.

LA Wildcats Coach David Looper said, "We did not play any defense, and we made some very costly errors that ultimately cost us the game."

The 'Cats then played two games on Saturday, the first against Richland. Richland took a sizable lead early, scoring 5 runs in the third inning and 3 more runs in the fourth to lead 8-0 after four innings.

The 'Cats picked up a run in the fifth inning. Richland answered with 2 runs in the sixth. LA was able to score one more run, but fell short 10-2.

Matt Quarles (3-2) started as pitcher for the 'Cats. He pitched 3 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 8 runs, walking 4 batters, and striking out 4 batters. Kyle Copeland relieved him, pitching the remaining 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, walking a batter, and striking out 5.

The 'Cats had 6 hits in the game. Josh Parsons went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, Matt Poston went 1 for 3 with a single, Bryant Harmon went 1 for 3 with a double, Kyle Copeland went 1 for 2 with a home run in the seventh inning, and Jesse Wolfram went 1 for 3.

"We didnŐt catch the ball all week," Coach Looper said. "We played poor defense and 5 errors cost us 7 runs."

The 'Cats faced the Upperman Bees in their second game on Saturday. LA again fell behind early with Upperman scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 3 runs in the second inning to lead 7-0 after two innings.

LA would find a run in the sixth inning and the score would remain there with the final being 7-1.

Bryant Harmon was the starting pitcher for the 'Cats. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, 7 runs, walking a batter, and striking out 6.

The 'Cats struggled at the plate with only 4 hits. Jesse Wolfram went 1 for 3 with a single, Josh Parsons went 1 for 3 with a double and 1 run batted in, James Parsons went 1 for 3 with a single, and Bryant Harmon went 1 for 3 with a double.

"We made errors all week," Coach Looper said. "Two of those errors cost us 4 runs, and we can not keep giving these up and expect to win."

After hosting a double-header against Cannon County on Tuesday, May 1, the 'Cats will host the first round of the district tournament on Thursday, May 3. The game is a must win for the 'Cats, a loss would result in the end of their season.

LAŐs Ricky Schindler, #20, redirects the ball in last week's 3-0 win over Friendship Christian.

The Livingston Academy Wildcats soccer team increased its overall record to 8-2 overall, and 5-1 in the district on Thursday, April 26 when they defeated Friendship Christian by a score of 3-0 at LA.

Livingston Academy Soccer Coach Rick Sells said, "Our defensive crew really played well. Josh Krack, Bo Byers, Jacob Cobble, and Chris Dingwall did a great job shutting down their offense. They didnŐt make a run to score more than three times in the second half."

The 'Cats controlled both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game with goalkeeper Matt OŐBrien getting the shutout over Friendship Christian.

The 'Cats took 15 shots on goal in the game. Joseph McGill, Silas Stoddart, and Ricky Schindler each scored a goal for Livingston Academy.
