LA Baseball Season Off To Rocky Start
By Russell Garret

Livingston Academy third baseman Kyle Copeland waits to tag an Upperman baserunner in Monday's district game played at Wildcat Field.

The Livingston Academy Wildcats baseball team opened the 2001 season Friday, March 16 on the road against Kingston.

Kingston jumped on top early, scoring 2 runs in the first inning, and then 2 more in the third inning. The ‘Cats found themselves down 4-0 after three. LA did try to rally in the sixth inning, scoring 3 runs, but that is all they would get.

The 'Cats had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. Eric Johnson smacked a base hit to left field with 2 out to bring Josh Cravins to the plate, but Kingston's fielder ended the game by making a perfect throw home to nail Josh Cravins at the plate. The Wildcats took their first loss of the season by a score of 4-3.

Matt Poston started on the mound for the 'Cats. He had 5 strikeouts, walked 3 batters, and gave up 5 hits. Shea Stout took over the pitching duties in the fifth inning, striking out 3 batters, walking 1, and giving up 3 hits.

Livingston had 9 hits in the game. Josh Parsons, Robert Richardson, and Eric Johnson each went 2 for 4 with a run batted in, and Shea Stout had a hit and drove in a run.

Wildcats Coach David Looper said, "We started off real cold. We didn't have any hits until the fifth inning, and we made some key errors that cost us the game. We have to make those if we want to win."

The 'Cats then hosted the Upperman Bees on Monday, March 19. This was LA's first district game of the season. LA lost to Upperman, dropping the overall record to 0-2, 0-1 in the district.

The Bees stung early, scoring a run in the first inning, 2 runs in the second inning, and 3 in the fourth inning to put LA down 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. LA put one run on the board in the fourth inning, but would not score any more.

Upperman picked up 3 more runs in the sixth inning, and 5 runs in the seventh. The Bees whipped the 'Cats by a final score of 14-1.

Bryant Harmon stood on the mound for LA. He had 1 strikeout, and gave up 2 walks and 4 hits. He was relieved by Matt Quarles in the fifth inning. Quarles had 4 strikeouts, and walked 6 batters and gave up 3 hits. Eric Johnson came in to close the seventh inning, striking out 1 batter.

"We let the score get away from us, and I should have pulled the pitcher," Coach Looper said. "That was my fault, but the score really doesn't reflect the game. They picked up eight of those runs in the last two innings."

The 'Cats only had 3 hits in the game. Matt Poston, Bryant Harmon, and Eric Johnson each had a hit, and Johnson picked up the only RBI. "We just could not hit," Coach Looper said. "Nick Davis pitched a great game and we swung at a lot of bad pitches, and we still need to work on our defense."

LA will finish out the week with three road games. After playing at Cannon County on Tuesday, March 20, the Wildcats will travel to Carthage to play the Smith County Owls on Thursday, March 22, then travel to Sparta to play the White County Warriors on Friday, March 23.

The Wildcats return home to host the Jackson County Blue Devils on Monday, March 26, and will then host the York Institute Dragons on Tuesday, March 27 in a make-up game previously set for March 15.

LA Soccer Team Opens Season Against Oneida

By Russell Garrett

The Livingston Academy Men's Soccer Team opened the season with a road game against Oneida.

LA played well, but did not have enough for the win. Livingston had more offense than Oneida. The 'Cats had 20 shots on goal, twice as many as Oneida, but could not get any of them to fall.

LA Wildcats Coach Rick Sells said, "We played well, we hustled the whole game, but we couldn't get any shots to fall for us.

"Our defense played well, they were very quick and we stayed right with them. We played well enough to get the win, and I wish we could play them again."

After traveling to York on Monday, March 19, Livingston will host Mt. Juliet Christian on Friday, March 23, then host Boyd Christian on Tuesday, March 27.

LA Tennis Team Opens Play Against Celina
By Russell Garrett

The Livingston Academy Tennis Team opened the season on the road Wednesday, March 14 with a match against the Celina Bulldogs.

The boys lost to Celina 2-8. Casey Hunter and Andy Robbins won sets for LA, but that would not be enough. The girls did not win any of their sets but all were very close.

Coach Rick Moles said, "I think we played well in our first match. Even though the girls didn't win any sets, they were all very close. We were not white washed at all."

The LA girls team then hosted Mt. Juliet Christian on Thursday, March 15. The Lady Wildcats lost a close one to Mt. Juliet 5-4.

Winning sets for LA, Dana Ledbetter defeated Melody Kitchen 8-6, Rachel Barlow defeated Kim Overstreet 8-1, and Wrenda Curd defeated Lindsey Speck 8-6. In doubles competition, Kila Cope and Dana Ledbetter defeated Walker and Overstreet 8-5.

"We are making some mistakes, but as long as we are learning from them and improving, we will win some matches before the year is up," Coach Moles said.

After traveling to Friendship Christian on Tuesday, March 20, LA will travel to Macon County to make up a game previously scheduled for March 12. The 'Cats will then face Cannon County in an away match on Thursday, March 22, then host Celina on Monday, March 26.
