The 2000 high school girls soccer season will begin in earnest for the Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats Thursday, Aug. 24 when they travel to Sparta to take on the White County Warriorettes at 4:30 p.m. Then the Lady ‘Cats will host Boyd Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29.

LA Coach Rick Sells believes the team will make a good showing this year.

"I think we'll be better," he said. "We're more athletic than we were, not as much experience, but more athletic, and at key positions too. I think we'll score more."

In the past endurance has been a negative factor for the Lady ‘Cats, that has changed for the 2000 season.

"I've got girls now that can run all day," Coach Sells said. "We're a little slow on defense. I'm worried about that. We're too slow."

The team has a youthful turn for this season, with four freshmen starting: Danielle Thrasher, Kasey Baltimore, Ferran Stephens, and fullback Jessica Smith.

"They are just more athletic," Coach Sells said. "They've played soccer when they were little."

Other freshmen on this year's squad are Sarah Jowers, Elisabeth McGill, Chelsie Stover, Ashley Ledbetter, Sandra Cobble, and Kayla Copeland.

The team has eight sophomores: Tabatha Crabtree, Jenna McCormick, Jodi Morgan, Rachel Romzek, Deidra Garrett, Christen Cates, Melissa Reeder, and Cheryl Thompson.

Seven juniors are on the team: Sarah Goodman, Kim Dillon, Lora Brady, Heather Petry, Lindsey Johnson, Tabitha Robbins, and April Krack.

Senior leadership will come from Lacey White, Ashley Wright, and Samantha Copeland.

Coach Sells isn't asking too much of his team this year; he wants only one thing.

"I'm just looking for wins," he said.
