LA Sports Report

Lady Wildcats Volleyball
The Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats Volleyball Team will open the 2000 season at Lafayette on Tuesday, Aug. 22 when they take on Macon County at 5:30 p.m.

LA Coach Merl Smith looks to keep last season in the past and make this season a winning one.

"Last year we didn't get out of the district. Of my 19 years of coaching that was only the second time we hadn't been to the sub state. "We're going to get back. We're going to get back.

"We're going to try to win the district. Get to at least the sub state and see what we can do. When you get to the sub state, you've got a chance. Play one good match and you're in the state. That's our goal right now."

The team is made up of three seniors - Letrice Smith, Cory Parsons, and Brandi Dillon; four juniors - Jessica Leach, Renee Melton, Hannah Stafford, and Jenna Baltimore; two sophomores - Althea Allred and Mallory Sells; and three freshmen - Megan Thompson, Kelly Thurman, and Katrina Beechboard.

"We lost five seniors, but we're a little more athletic than we have been," Coach Smith said.

The Lady 'Cats will not be the district favorite as in years past, and will not have an easy run through a strong district. Coach Smith named four teams in particular that will have to be reckoned with in any attempt at district domination.

"Upperman is real strong. They got most of their players back," he said. "Van Buren County got all their players back. Macon County's going to be strong. Jackson County will be."

The Lady 'Cats have been playing preseason games as a tune-up for the regular season, playing the likes of White County, Portland, Upperman, and Brentwood Academy.

"We've been playing pretty well, better than I thought we would," Coach Smith said.
