Members of the Speck Funeral Home 12-under 6th District Tournament
champion team are Lakeisha Walker, Amanda Qualls, Stasha Babb, Leslie
Poston, Jessica McDonald, Heather Nolen, David Parsons of Speck
Funeral Home, Casey Emerton, Jade Long, Lorianne Carr, Taryn Williams,
Andrea Borden, Ashley Hall, coaches Chuck Babb, Tina Williams, Brittany
Ray and Rebecca Smith, and Rick McDonald.
Speck Funeral Home's 12-under girls softball team traveled to
Carthage on Saturday, June 26 to participate in the 6th District
Tournament.
After winning the first two games, Speck's next game was for the
winner's bracket. They played a Smith County team, Thunder and Lightning,
that had never lost a game all year. Speck's won the game 16-9 with
great defense and key hits from the whole team, and a Brittany Ray
home run.
The win put Thunder and Lightning in the loser's bracket where
they played another Overton County team, Sears, for the right to
face Speck's in the championship game. Sears and Thunder and Lightning
played back and forth for seven innings with Thunder and Lightning
winning by a slim 19-16 margin.
The championship game saw the two teams tie at 2 after the first
inning. Speck's then scored seven runs in the second, with the help
of an Andrea Borden home run. Thunder and Lightning plated one run
in the inning.
In the third inning, Thunder opened with 14 runs to Speck's 2,
putting the score at 17-11 in Thunder and Lightning's favor.
Speck's defense shut down Thunder in the fourth inning, allowing
no runs, then the Speck offense added 4 runs to close the gap to
15-17.
Thunder added four more runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh
innings, while Speck managed three runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, down to their last shot, trailing
19-21, Speck's Leslie Poston singled, Casey Emerton walked, and
Stasha Babb hit a double to bring Poston home. Ashley Hall stepped
up and hit the fence, sending home the winning runs.
Others adding key hits in the win were Taryn Williams, Jessica
McDonald, Lakeisha Walker, Amanda Qualls, Becky Smith, Heather Nolan,
Lori Ann Carr, and Casey Emerton. Jade Long was sidelined with an
injury.
