80 Years Ago In Overton County

I believe in the present. It alone has possibilities. The past
is dead and the future is yet unborn.
Miss Lena Reagan is here for summer vacation.
B.L. Speck and son, Bland, are prospecting in Missouri this week.
Mr. Elbert Brooks and Miss Bessie Crabtree were married Sunday.
He is a son of Joe Brooks and recently returned from the army. she
is the daughter of Wm. Crabtree.
Garfield Reagan is here from Byrdstown visiting his brother, C.H.
Reagan.
John L. Meadows has gone to Detroit, Mich. to work.
J.T. Stonecipher and son, Curtis, were in Cookeville Saturday to
attend the meeting of the stockholders of the Maxwell Bros. Grocery
Co.
Extra pay for all teachers who attend summer school, $2.50 per
month by action of the county board last Saturday, no excuse for
staying away. G.O. Lea, County Supt.
Mrs. Denton Bilbrey, of Algood, married Mr. Swep Rogers, of Dyersburg
last Friday evening. Mrs. Bilbrey was the widow of Elmo Bilbrey,
who was drowned in Caney Fork several years ago. Mr. Rogers is a
soldier recently home from France.
Several nights ago, "Uncle" Lem Simpson, one of our most worthy
colored citizens, was aroused from his slumbers by his faithful
watchdog baying at something near the house, He took his trusty
shotgun and went to the scene. Seeing what he took as a black bear
he fired, only to find he killed his fine Angus calf, five days
old.
Bessie Mofield and Ruth Officer are home from school in Bristol.
Wm. Ray was here from Monterey on business Saturday.
K.L.French has received a letter from his son, Paul, written May
29 stating that he had appendicitis and was in the hospital in England.
Mable and Sidnie Bilbrey and Christene and Rose McCormick are visiting
Mrs. W.Y. Keisling at Nettle Carrier.
John Ferril visited his two brothers and sister at Alpine over
Sunday.
Berry Jones and his son-in-law, Cy. Neely, have bought a farm near
Monterey and will move form Nettle Carrier.
John Ledford, a prosperous farmer, died at his home near West Fork
Saturday, aged about sixty-five. He leaves a wife and several children.
