Bessie Adkisson Mrs. Adkisson died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Royal Care Nursing Home in Cleveland. She and her husband were owners and operators of the former KOA Campgrounds in Monterey. She was a member of the Cookeville senior citizens, active in the centerÕs art classes for many years, and a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church in Cleveland. Born January 12, 1914, in Cumberland County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Laura (Tabor) Whited. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Adkisson, a daughter, Lydia June Riddle; and two sons, James Hale Russell and John William Ross Smiddie. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Judy Adkisson, Cleveland, and David "Buck" and Beryl Adkisson, Mobile, AL; a step-son and his wife, David and Brenda Adkisson, Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Laura Wayne Murphy, Naples, FL; a step-daughter, Margaret Joyce Bray, Pensacola,FL; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Mrs. AdkissonÕs family and friends served as pallbearers.
Thurston B. Jones Mr. Jones died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Standing Stone Health Care Center in Monterey. He was a farmer and a Navy veteran of WWII. Born January 5, 1924, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Bluford F. and Polly (Stamps) Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clayton A. Jones. Survivors include a sister, Reva Fixsal, Indianapolis, IN; a brother, Harley L. Jones, Cookeville; and several nieces and nephews.
Longia Olen "Curly" Taylor Mr. Taylor died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at his home. He was a worker in the Pattern Shop at Chrysler Foundry for 30 years, a U.S Navy veteran of WWII, and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean war. Born January 30, 1927, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Clure and Annie B. (Poston) Taylor. Survivors include his wife, Agnes Wynell (Holt) Taylor, Indianapolis, IN; four sons, Dan Taylor, Greenwood,IN, Bruce Taylor, Indianapolis, IN, Lonnie Ray Taylor, Castalian Springs, and Bill Shinkle Taylor, Indianapolis, IN; a sister, Pearl Pennington, Cookeville; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Ray Padgett Mr. Padgett died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a used car dealer, a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII, and affiliated with the Assembly of God. Born December 26, 1925, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Millard and Ada (Williams) Padgett. Survivors include his wife, Marie Padgett, Livingston; three sons, Hoyt Padgett and Ray Padgett, both of Livingston, and David Padgett, Dayton, OH; a daughter, Sharon Arabi, Dayton, OH; two step-daughters, Ilene Day, Livingston, and Irene Coffman, Monterey; a brother, Wilbur Padgett, McMinnville; a sister, Avia Jones, Cookeville; three grandchildren, Saria Arabi, Holly Kirk, and Katie Hicks; and four great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Larry Key, Larry Key, Frankie Jones, Randy Coffman, Lewis Davidson, and Jeff Coffman.
Ronald Ivan McKinnis Sr. Mr. McKinnis died Friday, May 4, 2001, at V.A. Medical Center in Murfreesboro. He was retired from McKinnis Lawn Care, served in the Navy and Army and fought in the Korean conflict. Born April 2, 1933, in Clayton, MO, he was the son of Norman Ivan McKinnis and the late Grace Elizabeth (Barr) McKinnis. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by step-parents, Albert and Pearl Holden; and a step-sister, Emery Dawn Holden. Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Dorothy Ann Lois (Haney) McKinnis, Cookeville; four sons, Ron McKinnis Jr. and Bradford Allen McKinnis, both of Cookeville, and Bruce Franklin McKinnis and Terry Lance McKinnis, both of Rickman; four sister-in-laws and spouses, Ernest and Darlene Williams and Judy Long, all of Jackson County, Bobby Joe and Faye Hammock, Baxter, and Clifford and Shirley Hensley, Cookeville; four brother-in-laws and spouses, Aaron Haney, Herbert and Samatha Haney, Kenneth and Ruby Haney, and Marshall Haney and special friend, Sue Mabe, all of Jackson County; five grandchildren, Shane McKinnis, Alecia McKinnis, Kimberly McKinnis, Chasity Grasty, and Elijah Grasty; four great grandchildren, Isonia McKinnis, Preston Grasty, Justice Grasty and Allinuah Jade Grasty; and three step-grandchildren, Angie Bohannon, Scarlett Roberts, and Bill Roberts. Members of the VFW served as pallbearers.
Effie Mae Key Mrs. Key died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Standing Stone Health Care Center in Monterey. She was a retired factory worker and a member of the Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church. Born September 10, 1906, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late John and Fannie (Parrigan) Webb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Key; a son, John Key; a sister, Mattie Eldridge; and two brothers, Clyde Webb and Washington Webb. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Gwen Key and David and Ruby Key, all of the Pleasant Ridge Community; a brother, Jim Webb, Pleasant Ridge Community; and two sisters, Opal Webb, Monterey, and Ona Wilson, Cedar Chapel Community; and six great-great grandchildren.
Horace O. Duke Mr. Duke died May 1, 2001, at Hospice Care Center in Copley Township, OH. He was a steel worker in the auto industry, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, first in Airborne Division and later in the Special Forces, Green Beret, and a member of the Atwater Baptist Church. Born October 10, 1930, in Livingston, he was the son of the late Richard and Ruth (Matthews) Duke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Becky Duke. Survivors include a son, Gary Duke, Akron, OH; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Dave McBee, Arkon, OH; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Barbara Duke, Detroit, MI; five sisters and three brother-in-laws, Hillis Duke and Gladys and Bill Langford, all of Cookeville, Jean Williams, Detroit, MI, Blanch and Junior Fox, Boaz, AL, and Janice and Bob Woosley, Livingston; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Russell Maynord, Reed Maynord, Leon Flatt, Earl Carr, Glenn Gore, and Bill Thomas.
Mr. Jones died Thursday, May 2, 2001, at Cedars Health Care. He was a retired saw mill worker and of the Baptist faith. Born December 17, 1920, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Eli and Nettie (Reagan) Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary White; and three brothers, Royce Jones, James Jones, and E.B. Jones. Survivors include a brother-in-law, Eld. Edgar Leon White, Lebanon; a nephew, Randall "Rudy" White, Lebanon; a great niece, Leah Elizabeth White, Lebanon; and a great nephew, Lee Elliott White, Lebanon. Pallbearers were family and friends.
