THP to step up seat belt, DUI enforcement during Memorial Day weekend

Tennessee Highway Patrol will step up seat belt and DUI enforcement efforts over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. THP is also encouraging all motorists to drive safely during the 78-hour period.
State troopers will conduct several seat belt and sobriety checkpoints and will be out in force patrolling statewide to help ensure safe roadways this holiday.

TVA sale proposal blamed for loss of bond value

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) on Wednesday, May 15 told U.S. Department of Energy’s top official that the Obama administration’s “ill-conceived, reckless” proposal in the president’s budget to sell Tennessee Valley Authority damaged the value of the utility’s bonds and failed to account for the impact to ratepayers, taxpayers, and nuclear facilities.

“Did you know that, as a result of just the random mention of it in the budget, the Tennessee Valley Authority bonds lost a market value of a half-billion dollars?” Alexander asked Acting Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman.

Haslam signs food tax reduction bill

Darnbush takes command of 278th Armored Cavalry

The largest unit in the Tennessee National Guard has a new commander after ceremonies on Sunday, April 14 in Knoxville.

Col. Frank C. McCauley, who has commanded the Regiment since May 2011, turned command over to Col. Darrell D. Darnbush, who previously served as the Chief of Joint Staff for Tennessee National Guard and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations.

State Highway Patrol honors 41 fallen troopers

Tennessee Departmetn of Safety and Homeland Security and Tennessee Highway Patrol held a special memorial service to honor State Troopers killed in the line of duty.

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Tracy Trott led a special memorial service recently to honor Tennessee state troopers and other law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. In observance of National Police Week, the THP’s annual Memorial Service was held at the department’s headquarters in Nashville.

AG urges consumers to be wary of storm-related scams

Tornadoes, high winds, ice, and flooding have caused widespread damage across the state over the past few weeks, and many people are quickly trying to recover and rebuild. Attorney General Bob Cooper and officials with Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs are urging consumers to use caution while trying to repair roofs, remove trees, and make repairs to guard against those who wish to profit off someone else’s misfortune.

“The past few weeks have been very trying for many people, but the need to stay vigilant is important in your search to get immediate help,” Cooper said. “Most Tennesseans are always quick to help their neighbors in times of trouble, but it is important to help provide storm victims with the best information and preventative measures they can get to avoid being victimized again.”

Problems that sometimes arise after a natural disaster include price gouging, in which a business unreasonably raises rates on essential goods and services during a State of Emergency or in response to a disaster, as well as fraud in the areas of home repair and debris removal.
