Tennessee State Parks announced Thursday, April 4 that Pickett State Park’s lake and dam will undergo major renovations beginning this month to repair the dam as required by Tennessee Safe Dams Program standards.
The Pickett State Park dam was built in the mid-1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps, commonly known as the CCC. This is the first major repair work that has been performed on the dam in more than 75 years.
The dam has no immediate safety concerns associated as it relates to park visitors, according to Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). The renovations will consist of replacing the concrete spillway cap, along with pressure grouting all of the seams and abutment areas. The dam’s valve will also be replaced with a new, hydraulically controlled valve to allow for better control of lake levels throughout the year.
Lake levels will be down during much of the first phase of construction, which is scheduled to conclude just prior to Memorial Day weekend.
In addition, TWRA’s spring fish stocking efforts will be postponed during this time; however, park management will work closely with the construction contractor to ensure that no major disruptions in lake levels take place during the peak summer boating and swimming seasons, which begin Memorial Day weekend and run through Labor Day, according to TDEC.
All park facilities will remain open during the renovations and current programs and events will be ongoing.
Visitors are encouraged to contact the park office with any questions or concerns at 931-879-5821. |
